A guide to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh
After experiencing the busy life in Hanoi, it’s time to spend time with nature. Ninh Binh is a beautiful province with many places for sightseeing, mountains, and rivers. And best of all, go on a boat tour, and follow the river through rice fields surrounded by limestone mountains.
Travel tip: Forget about Ninh Binh City and stay in Tam Coc
When you travel to Ninh Binh, we recommend staying in Tam Coc because the city of Ninh Binh is quite busy like Hanoi with many means of transport, while Tam Coc is a beautiful village surrounded. by the limestone mountains right in the wild.
The distance from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is over 85 km. It will take you about 2 to 3 hours to get to Ninh Binh depending on transportation.
Option 1: Bus
Mini-van
There is a limousine car (the most expensive and, of course, the most comfortable), a berth-seat bus, and a soft-seated bus. More than 20 bus agencies are operating in Hanoi, some of the most familiar names are Hoang Long, Ninh Binh Excursion… The departure time for each bus is different, there will be buses from 7:00 to around 19:00. The ride on the bus Hanoi – Ninh Binh will be approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the traffic. Some bus agencies provide a pick-up service (they will pick you up and drop you at the arranged destinations).
Public bus
You can save money by taking public buses if you are staying close to Giap Bat bus station and booking accommodation in Ninh Binh City. However, take in mind that you still need to pay for a taxi when you are staying in Tam Coc. The disadvantage of taking the bus from Giap Bat station is that this station is a 30-minute drive from the Old Quarter in Hanoi.
The public buses leave from Giap Bat bus station in Hanoi to Ninh Binh every hour and you can buy a bus ticket at Giap Bat bus station for 70.000 VND. Make sure to buy the ticket at one of the ticket offices to avoid overpaying. The public bus stops at Ninh Binh bus station which is close to the railway station in Ninh Binh city center, but still a 15-minute ride to Tam Coc.
Option 2: Train
Hanoi capital of Vietnam and the main transport center. From here you can easily find many moving services. Train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is a popular and interesting means in Vietnam. It’s cheap, fast and interesting.
The train station in Ninh Binh is in the center of the city and about a 15-minute ride to Tam Coc. Once you arrive at Ninh Binh train station, we advise continuing your journey by taxi to Tam Coc or our motorbike taxi service.
If you prefer to stay in Ninh Binh you can also find several hotels around the train station, but remember it is just a busy city and not so interesting for tourists.
There are 6 trains leaving from Hanoi to Ninh Binh train station every day, of which SE5 is the most popular option as it offers very convenient travel times.
We recommend taking a morning or afternoon train, so you won’t arrive in the late evening at your accommodation.
Optional: Motorbike taxi from Ninh Binh to Tam Coc

You will find several accommodations within a walkable distance from Ninh Binh train station, but we recommend continuing your journey to Tam Coc. This little town is 6 km south of Ninh Binh and takes about 15 min by motorbike taxi.
As there are no public buses from Ninh Binh to Tam Coc, you will have to take a motor taxi which costs around 25.000-50.000 VND.
